American Lotus

I had my first viewing of this marvelous plant this month. It was a lovely surprise to see American Lotus existing in and around a park pond in Brentwood, TN.

The large blooms rival the southern magnolia evergreen in size. Easily the diameter was 12 inches across. Many of the plants surpassed 5 feet in height and the leaves of the older plants were 18 inches or more in width.

In the center of each bloom is a green cone which holds tiny seeds. As the flower is pollinated and then loses its petals, the cone grows and along with it the size of the seeds increase.

What a spectacular creation!
